Dark, dull and uneven skin tone is a common beauty complaint, especially if we’re talking about dark skin on elbows, underarms, knees, sometimes even inner thighs. This is not a medical condition – it is simply a consequence of one of the following factors or a combination of thereof:
- Sun exposure,
- Shaving,
- Frequent use of hair removing creams,
- Very dry skin,
- Accumulation of dead skin cells,
- Use of skin-damaging cosmetic products,
- Wearing tight, uncomfortable clothes,
- Hormonal imbalance.
Although there are multiple factors why one’s skin can suddenly darken, many people, especially women, feel self-conscious about this common skin issue. If that is you, no worries, there are completely natural ways to get even, healthy-looking skin.
Oatmeal and Yogurt
Yogurt contains lactic acid, which can exfoliate and lighten the skin. Oatmeal has soothing properties and can also help in evening the skin tone. Just mix one tbsp of yogurt with 1 tbsp of oatmeal, let it sit for an hour and then apply to your problem areas. It’s best to leave this remedy on your skin for 40-60 minutes and then rinse off, but if you don’t have time, 15 minutes will do.
Coconut Oil and Lemon
Coconut oil is a highly nourishing beauty oil that hydrates and moisturizes the skin. With its acidic, low pH properties, lemon can brighten and lighten your skin tone, but because it can be irritating, it’s best to be mixed with an oil. Take one tbsp of coconut oil and mix it with 1 tsp of fresh lemon juice. Apply on affected areas, let it work its magic for 15 minutes and then rinse off.
Aloe Vera
Aloe vera gel can help you hydrate your skin, reduce hyperpigmentation and skin irritation. Take an aloe vera leaf, cut it in half and scoop out its jelly-like substance. Apply the gel on your skin, leave it on for an hour and then wash it off with water.
Milk, Honey and Almond Oil
Honey is a wonderful healing, soothing, brightening agent that can help you even out your skin tone in no time. Milk, thanks to its lactic acid, can also help you lighten the affected skin areas. As for almond oil, it is moisturizing and hydrating and will help hold honey and milk together. Just mix 1 tbsp of honey with 1 tbsp of almond oil and 2 tbsps of milk. Apply the remedy to the skin and let it sit for 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water.
